The Department of Translation focuses on cultivating senior undergraduates in translation and Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) students. The undergraduate translation program features international communication translation, aiming to foster professionals with solid linguistic foundations, broad knowledge, strong translation capabilities and a certain theoretical background.
The Master of Translation and Interpreting program targets the cultivation of high-end bilingual (English-Chinese) translation talents and interdisciplinary professionals with an international perspective. Its curriculum emphasizes translation practice and reflects the characteristics of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Multiple senior translators from the industry participate in the curriculum development of the MTI program, collaborating with faculty of the Department to offer a series of courses including "International Communication Translation Workshop", "Introduction to International Organizations" and "Special Modules on Translation Technology".
The Department has launched joint master's training programs with the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (USA) and the University of Melbourne (Australia). To date, many students have obtained dual master's degrees through these programs. Graduates are mainly employed in government departments, international organizations, multinational enterprises, educational institutions and public institutions. Some students pursue further studies at prestigious overseas universities.
